Dressing To The Maxi-mum

Every time that Kristin over at BonBon Rose Girls touts the virtues of the maxi dress, I always think “Yeah, those are cute but I’m too short to wear one.” This past weekend I finally quit my nay-saying and actually tried one on. I was out searching for a dress to wear to a wedding we’re going to in Costa Rica this winter (not an easy task when stores don’t have their full spring collections out yet), when I went into Anthropologie on a whim.

I dug through the sale rack and spotted this long, silky number with a really cool crocheted neckline:

Super-long, a size that I haven’t been since before I got pregnant, and a 70′s style that I never wear, this dress is not something I should have even bothered trying on. But the satin navy-blue sash was so pretty that I had to give it a go. Let’s just say I was SHOCKED by how comfortable I felt and how good I looked! I suspect that it’s not meant to be a maxi dress – it just looks that way on my 5’1″ frame. It works for my post-baby body because:

The elastic waist (hidden by the sash) is super forgiving
An allover print keeps the eye moving
The silk fabric skims the body without sticking to less toned areas

A dress this cool needs equally cool but minimal accessories, so I grabbed this pair of large shimmery earrings.

Finishing the look will be strappy gold sandals with a 1.5″ wedge heel and a simple vintage gold evening bag that used to belong to my mom.

I can’t wait to put the whole look together. Mostly though, I can’t wait to wear it on a tropical beach!

  1. I love this dress! and what a great price for Anthro. I’m glad you found a maxi that works for you, even though I’m 5’7 I find that some of them are too long for me and I have to wear heels lol.

  2. I love clothes that are forgiving and especially at the steal price of $70 bucks! You can wear it on fat days and totally get your money worth… haha!

  3. That looks perfect for an informal wedding. The earrings are a perfect compliment. You must be really excited about a warm weather trip with all of the snow you’ve had to contend with in the past few weeks.

  4. Love it! I am totally into the maxi dresses and hoping they stay around this next season. Great find!
